Inspiration from a child....

“Though small in size and perceivably timid and meek, the cub of a lion fights and ascends the wild mighty elephant and finally kills it. In this world, when it comes to achieving things, age is never an impediment.”

Here a cub ventures to internalize and share the esoteric meaning of the Mighty Thiruppavai, a divya prabandham that eclipses the works of all other Azhwars and stands testimony to Andal’s prowess and ability to pack inconceivable sashtrarthams in simple pasurams.

One of our Donors and Volunteers from Thiruvallikkeni shares his anubhavam here very succinctly:

Krishnan in Bhagavad gIta says "மாஸானாம் மார்கஸீர்ஷோஹம்" (maasaanaam maargasIrshOham) meaning "Of the months I am Margazhi".Even though kannan emperumaan said that in "dwaapara yugam" itself, it was not until BhU dEvi came down to srivilliputhur as Andal in kali yugam out of her mercy as the child of போகத்தில் வழுவாத புதுவையர்கோன் (bhOgaththil vazhuvaatha puthuvaiyarkOn), and recited thiruppaavai during this month, it became extremely popular. What more, our purvaacharyaas specifically emperumaanaar, bhattar, etc were so immersed in thirupaavai anubhavam which can be seen in many ஐதிஹங்கள் (recorded incidents). Due to these reasons this month has become a synonym for பகவத்/பாகவத அனுபவம் (bhagavath/bhaagavatha anubhavam) for srivaishnavas. This is one of the reasons srivaishnavas dont generally organise any family functions during this month to avoid any external disturbances and immerse thoroughly in the Krishnanubhavam through Thiruppavai.

In thirupaavai vyaakyaana avathaarikai, periyavaachan pillai builds a hierarchy where samsaarigal are the lowest level and Andal is at the highest level. Rishigal, azhwargal and periyazhwar are layered in between. Similarly, our purvaacharyaas have said thiruppaavai is "வேதம் அனைத்துக்கும் வித்து" (vEdham anaiththukkum viththu) - this is not said about any other prabhandham. And also, even though this prabhandham is so deep in knowledge it is also recited in every nook and corner in every town/village. There are also several places where we have upanyaasam (lecture) of thiruppaavai during this month. So, similar to emperumaan, thirupaavai also has பரத்வம் (parathvam) and ஸௌலப்யம் (soulabhyam). It has great in depth meanings and is easily approachable by even a 2 year old child (yes literally).

Chiranjeevi Elayavilli Satajit's lecture series on thirupaavai at Nampillai Sannidhi, Thiruvallikkeni is nectar to the ears, to say the least. He is only 6+ years old and comes in an illustrious family of vidwaans. Satajit's great grand father is Vaikuntavaasi Alwarthirunagari U.Ve. Elayavilli Satagopachariar swamy (praised by Kanchi Swamy as "Sri Sukthi rathnakaram"). His grandfather is U.Ve. Elayavilli Bhuvarahacahriar swamy (One of the few ubhaya vedhanta vidwans of current times - while living in Bangalore he did grantha kaalakshepam for 35+years every day). His Father is U.Ve. Elayavilli Sriraman swamy - groomed under the guidance of Bhuvarahachariar swamy and fully engaged in pravachana kainkaryam.

Satajit's upanyasam is by Sri U.Ve. M.A. Venkatakrishnan swamy. Alteast 30 - 40 people (including several young children who are our future pillars) are attending his upanyasam every day. This is happening at 4 : 30pm everyday. Adiyen prays to Rukmini sametha Sri Parthasarathy, azhwar/acharyas that Satajit's upanyaasa kainkaryam grows many fold and become one of the stars of our sampradaayam for the next generation.

And this what thirupaavai can do - it reaches every one and can make a vidwaan even out of a playful child.

Children like Shatajith are an inspiration to our children ( first to us). With hardly any time to prepare elaborately, this child has courageously decided to share its anubhavam of Thiruppavai.Stage fear or inhibition seems to be out of his dictionary. The child travels with his father everyday and patiently listens to his upanyasam that runs to almost 2 hours .While returning, he puts forth his doubts to his father on what was discoursed and gets clarified.Let us endeavour to make our children take interest in Sampradayam.Whether we are there to guide them in their lives, our Sampradayam will definitely stay glued to their hearts and guide them in every action.
