The Scholar

Priya arangan adiyar,

The Swamy who had the marvellous experience at Thiruvanantapuram is Sri U. Ve. Elayavilli Bhuvarahachariar Swamy (find below) of Azhwar Thirunagari. Today, Aippasi Kaarthigai, is swamy’s thirunakshtram and this year is his shatabhisekam (80th birthday). Swamy is a scholar par excellence and one among the few living souls who have had tutelage under stalwarts such as Sri. U. Ve. P. B. Annangarachariar swamy, Sri. U. Ve. Nallan Ramakrishna Iyengar swamy, Sri. U. Ve. Karapankadu Swamy, Sri. U. Ve. Shatabisekam Swamy and Sri. U. Ve. Velukkudi Varadachariar swamy.

Bhuvarahachaiar Swamy has been instrumental in spreading Srivaishnava tradition in the land of Karnataka. Swamy’s erudition in the works of Azhwars and the Rahasya Granthams is unparalleled. Having spent most of His years at Bangalore conducting discourses everyday with a commendable retinue, Swamy is now back to his hometown Azhwar Thirunagari and involved is in the Kainkaryam of Azhwar. Not limiting Sampradaya Prachara to self, Swamy has made His last son a sampradaya scholar and initiated His grandson into Sampradaya Pravachana so that the tradition flows uninterruptedly.

Even today, swamy’s lectures are telecast across the globe through .

Swamy has a unique place in the Kalakshepa tradition where each line of a commentary is analysed word by word and commented upon. Listening to his lectures can enable one to understand the tenets of sampradaya and effortlessly explain it to a stranger. Such is His erudition and teaching skill.

Let us all pray the Divine Couple for the health and kainkarya-selvam of Swamy and His family.

An enchanting experience - do you know Him?

Priya arangan adiyars,

Before a decade, a vidwan with great erudition in the sampradaya works, especially, the outpourings of the Azhwars, decided to travel with his entourage to the divine kshetram of Thiruvanantapuram where dwells the Lord reclining on the Aadisesha.

The purpose of his journey was to discourse upon the Bhakthi-soaked words of Sri Namazhwar on Lord Padmanabha. The swamy was discoursing on the entire Thiruvaimozhi and felt an urge to visit this divya-kshetram when the discourse had reached the second decade of the tenth centum (10-2). Notwithstanding his unfavourable age, he bent his steps to the temple-town and made his way into the temple. Drinking the beauty of every pillar and structure of the temple with his eyes, he finally entered the sanctum sanctorum and caught glimpse of the huge garden of lotus lying on the Serpent Bed through the three doors. Eyes seemed to have waited all these years to have finally achieved its objective. What is mortal beauty when compared to the divine vision of Lord Padmanabha. With joy overflowing from his heart, he proceeded.

Having sought the permission of the temple-authorities to perform the kalakshepam in the mantapam close to the sanctum sanctorum, he settled to begin the discourse with the followers rapt in attention.

The swamy went on to beautifully explain the state of mind of Azhwar when the Lord of Anantapuram appeared before Him .With the impending ascent to the Permanent abode of Lord SrimanNarayana, Namazhwar’s love for the Lord reaches great heights in this decade. He lauds the Glory of Lord in his worshippable form at Thiruvanantapuram. There are great sins that we have accumulated in various births and now, when our heart and body want to reach the holy city, we are met with roadblocks due to the sins. But not to worry, the Lord’s names are handy enough to dispel the sins of the chanters of these names and thus remove all the impediments in the way of their achieving the desired objective. Azhwar further says that the name of the Lord of Thiruvanantapuram shall itself extend unto us protection on all fronts. If only we get into that holy spot, sins shall not come near us, not only now but in all successive births.

Thus, discoursing on the Glory of the Lord as in the heart of Namazhwar, the Swamy picked up the following verses and explained it:

“ Pesumin koosam inri – periya nir………..poosanai seykinraargal punniyam seidhavare” (10-2-4)

“Speak out, with no mental reserve,
What indeed is the penance performed
By those that worship, with the choicest flowers,
The Lord, who delightfully dwells in Ananthapuram, well adorned by fields fertile and gardens full of fragrance sweet and surrounded by the oceanic water vast”.

Azhwar extols the sanctity of the souls that have been blessed with the greatest fortune to worship the Lord at Thiruvanantapuram. It is by-no-means surprising that the denizens of the Supreme Abode marked by spotless purity and overwhelming devotion to the Lord, worship him there, in that transcendent setting with punctilious care and devotion ( Azhwar refers to the Archakas thus). Having splendidly spoken on the glory Azhwar attributes to the Archakas of the temple, the Swamy went on to explain how the Lord reciprocated their Bhakthi by being only in their possession even when the Lord’s dearest Aadisesha in the form of Ramanujacharya wanted to do away with them.

All of a sudden, a group of people rushed into the mantapam where the kalakshepam was progressing. With eyes brimming in tears, they fell down and prostrated. The whole gathering was astounded including the swamy. Coming close to Him, they spoke feebly due to the overwhelming emotions that swept their hearts. They told they were aware of a Saint called Namazhwar who sang on Thiruvanantapuram and its presiding deity. But they never imagined Azhwar’s Bhakthi to be so deep. And never did they imagine Azhwar would glorify their kainkaryam to such a magnitude in the description of Thiruvanantapuram.

They were the Archakas of the temple. They had listened to the discourse ( Tamizh) all the while and the words of Azhwar melted them. Notwithstanding the fact that the original speaker (Namazhwar) and the current speaker ( Upanyasakar) were of another Darshana, they expressed their gratitude for opening their eyes to the enormous glory attributed to the Archaka Kainkaryam.

Want to know who this Swamy is to whom the Lord of Thiruvanantapuram gave such an enchanting experience? Expect our next mail on that Swamy shortly.

Understanding the greatness and importance of Archaka kainkaryam, Srimaan Trust has been honouring the Archaka-kainkaryaparas every month under the “Sannidhi Vandanam” Scheme. The month of Purattasi witnesses the grandeur of the Lord of Seven Hills celebrating His birthday. Hence, His own sannidhi at Srirangam temple was chosen and the Archaka swamy honoured. The Swamy is a very devout Bhaktha and brims with zeal when performing the Kainkaryam. The children of SBK went to the Sannidhi ( in Manalveli) and honoured him.

Mother of 900 Children

Priya arangan adiyar,

Deepavali is an occasion when our mind is filled with thoughts of serenity and our mouths with savories. Beyond all this, it is the warmth and love of the family that lightens our heart. The love of the parents and spouse and the glitter in the eyes of our children is our true Deepavali. The moments with them are what we cherish and yearn for. When it comes to Namperumal and Srirenganachiar, it is the happiness of their adiyars that kindles their happiness and gives them satisfaction. And more than the grown adiyars like us, their pleasure would double if the adiyars are pure hearted children whom we ourselves adore.

At Srimaan Trust, as Servants in the execution of the Divine Couples’ wishes, we celebrate Deepavali lighting up the faces of the children by preparing savories and distributing it to them. In addition, we also plan to honour the Acharya Purushas and the service-providers (Kainkaryaparas) of Srirangam temple by distributing the savories to them. To us the glitter emitted from the faces and hearts of the children and the bhagavathas is far far more joyous than lighting up the sky with crackers.

This year around, the Trust has planned to prepare savories at SriKooratazhwan sannidhi ,Srirangam temple, and distribute to the following :
Number   (approx.)
Acharya Purushas
Archakas of Srirangam temple
Sripaadam thangigal of Srirangam temple
Every staff of Srirangam temple
Our Gurukulam (SBG) children
Srimaan Bhattar Kuzham children
Acharyah school children
South Ranga School children
Aranganayaki school

The following would be the prasadams that will be prepared, offered to Lord Narasimha followed by Sri Kooratazhwan and distributed to the above adiyars :

160 kgs of mixture
750 jangris
750 badushas

For the above, our actual cost is as follows :

It is only on such occasions that we can feel the happiness that pervades the heart of children and Bhagavathas . It would be a pleasure to watch the mere scene of children tearing open the pack of sweets and thrusting them into their mouths. If this happens due to our humble contribution, the pleasure will double just as a mother watching her children eat her hand made delicacies. And our Divine Parents would be very happy with the way we have celebrated the most celebrated festival of our Nation. Hence, we put before you to make your contributions to this Divine and of course, very sweet cause.

The preparation would begin on the 3rd of November and the distribution would commence by the 6th of November.

Let the divine couple shower their blessing forever on you and all.

One to be consulted

Priya Arangan Adiyar,
The Parashara Vishishta Parama Dharma Sashtram echoes thus :

अधीत्य मन्त्रमाचार्यं पूजयेचक्तितो द्विज:
आचार्य अधीन वृत्तिस्तु यावत जीवनं सदा शुचि:

“Learning the mantra from the Acharyan, one should always be at the feet of the Acharyan, submitting one’s actions to the order of the Acharyan” . This has been the prescription of the Scriptures for each one of us.

Great benefits are obtained at the place where the people respect their acharyas. Every shudha karyam at our house should take place at the behest of our Acharyan.Actually, the Karyam becomes shubham by His Presence. An Acharyan is to be considered the head of the family and He is to be consulted while making important decisions in life. Only then will we tread in the best available path. His Grace and wisdom will carry us through the ups and downs of life.

It is indeed a great fortune to take part in the proceedings where Acharyas are honoured.  Our Trust was recently blessed with this fortune on the occasion of Svami Koil Kandadai Annan's Thirunakshatram -  Kanni Purattaadhi.

Svami Koil Kandadai Annan is one of the foremost disciples of Svami Manavala Mamunikal and also one of the foremost devotees serving Lord Periya Perumal.  The students of Srimaan Bhattar Kuzham took part in the Thirunakshatra celebrations of this great acharya by exhibiting their regard through the current Koil Annan Svami, Sri U.Ve. Koil Kandadai Annan
Thiruvengadachariar Svami.

The students went to Svami's thirumaligai to honour him under the “Acharya Vandanam” scheme of the trust.  Svami was very pleased to see the devotion and regard of the students towards Svami Koil Kandadai Annan and him and blessed them.
