The withstanding wall...

Sri:
Srimate ramanujaya nama:

Priya arangan adiyar,

A HUT, YET A PALACE

The King VeeraSundaraBrahmaRaayan was the sishya of SriParasara Bhattar who was an illustrious star in the galaxy of Srivaishnava preceptors. The King had great love for the Lord of Srirangam and had taken up many kainkaryams of the Lord. One day it occurred to him that certain walls were to be raised to protect a praakaara of the Srirangam temple. He at once took up the task. But he found the thirumaaligai (house) of SriPillai Pillai Azhwan, sishya of SriKoorathazhwan on whose lap SriAzhwan shed his mortal coil before ascending to SriVaikuntam, obstructing the path of the wall to be built. He at once decided to collapse the house since the wall kainkaryam was far more important to protect the Lord than leaving the house of a person untouched.

SriParasara Bhattar, intimated of this plan of the King, called him immediately and explained " Oh Sishya! It is absolutely wonderful that you have taken up this Bhagawath Kainkaryam (Service to Lord). But when doing so, you shouldn't hurt the heart of the Lord. The Lord considers Bhaagavathas (adiyars) as his own life. Kainkaryam is one that brings smile to the face of the Lord; not what brings smile to yours. When SriThirumangai azhwar built the walls, the thirumaligai of Sri Thondar-adippodi azhwar came in between. What did he do? Did he collapse the thirumaligai? No. He left it untouched and built the walls around it. You should understand that the wall you plan to build will not protect the Lord; it is the Mangalasasanams (Praying for the Lord) of the Holy, devout men that'll protect the Lord".

Such is the importance attributed to the house of a Srivaishnavite. It is custom to call it reverentially as Thirumaaligai (Castle) though small in size, but owing to the presence of persons who have the ability to wish the good luck of the Lord Himself in it! Even if it is the house of an unacquainted Bhaktha, we should look upon it as the temple of the Lord itself. Recently, a very devout kainkaryasree(volunteer) SriPucchumani of our Trust performed Grihapravesham of his house at Srirangam. It was a joyous occasion for all since a new structure had risen to serve its life for kainkaryam like this kainkaryasree and his sister. The Grihapravesham followed by Sudarshana homam was conducted by the Gurukulam children with utmost dedication.

2nd DAY NIGHT : AN IMITATION
While we try imitating our friends, TV personalities, our Lord Srimannarayana
does something peculiar. He tries to dress up like SriMahalakshmi and imitate her manners.
Though very ambitious a task, nevertheless, he does need credit for trying to imitate Loka-Maata !

On the stormy turbulent day, when Vrindavan was almost marooned in the anger of Indra,
the little insignificant looking fellow called Krishna lifted a huge mountain

as the Lord of cattle, as the Lord of the common man
GOVINDA PATTABHISEKAM
The children of Gurukulam wanted to gift the Lord something for such an eventful coronation. They wanted to do what Indra had missed.

GUARDING THE SHRUTHI...

SriNamazhwar, while describing the Lord of Tiruvanantapuram , hails the archakas as " Poosanai seigindrargal, punniyam seidhavare! "
meaning " They perform pooja to Lord Anantha, since they have amassed Punyam". The Namboodri families have been uncompromising in
protecting the Vedas and customs of Sanathana dharma. Sri Govindan Namboothri lives up to the family tradition.

WHEN SHE MOVES THE EYEBROW, THE WORLD CHANGES...

The King mounts a mighty elephant. The elephant is bedecked in the best ornaments. The King glitters in the glaze of ornaments beautifying his body. And slowly, he strolls around the streets. The pauper looks on. He has nothing to match the mighty, all powerful and enormously rich King. Even if a small pearl leaves its place in the assemblage of ornaments on the Elephant and falls to the ground and reaches the hand of the pauper, he can live his life ever happily. The pauper has one thing to match the King though. He opens his mouth and smiles from the beginning of the King’s journey till its end exhibiting the sparkling array of well brushed teeth!!

Such is the difference we find in this world says SriParasara Bhattar in SriGunarathnaKosham. When the kataksham (Grace) of SriMahalakshmi falls on a person, he can turn from a pauper to a Prince in a night. Such is the power of Her Grace.

The children of the Gurukulam celebrated the Navarathri utsavam of their SriMahalakshmi with
great devotion.

Etched in the minds...

Sri:

Priya arangan adiyar,

THE SCENT THAT STILL WAFTS...

Sri Thirumangai azhwar describes the Kuda-Koothu ( dance with pots on various parts of the body) of Lord Krishna beautifully in his Tirunedunthandakam as “ Manru-amara-koottu-aadi-magizndhai-yendrum” in Naayika bhaavam. Lord Krishna would dance very aptly and keep everyone’s attention riveted on Him.

SriParasara Bhattar explains the effect of this dance with an example. Namperumal( Utsavar-Srirangam) goes around the Tiruveedhis during the Utsavams (Thy,Maasi,Panguni,Chitrai) and other utsavam. Even when an utsavam gets over and the deity goes back to the temple, the effect would be such that people think He is ever on the Veedhis in Vahanams with the Divine entourage, with the special mela kottu( drummin) and chants of the bhakthas. Such was the effect Lord Krishna had on the onlookers. They ever felt a dance fest happening in the streets and Krishna dancing beautifully.

Not only is that the case with Lord Krishna and Namperumal. Our own Gurukulam’s KasturiRangan celebrated His birthday on Aavani Rohini which was the culmination of a grand 10 day utsavam. Even today, we all feel the Lord going round the Veedhis with the children of the Gurukulam performing various kainkaryams.

A short description of each day’s event and the tireless effort of the children will form part of this series called “THE SCENT THAT STILL WAFTS”

WHY TEMPLES?

The Lord of this Universe, Srimannarayana pervades the entire creation. As Namazhwar puts it  “ Udal misai uyirena karandhu yengum parandhu ulam”, the Lord is everywhere and the entire chit(sentinents) & Achit(non-sentitent) are his shareeram (body).

Then one often gets this doubt, why go to a temple and pray before the deity when He exists everywhere, even as an in dweller of the jeevan? A simple answer to this is “ Air is everywhere, but we need a fan to feel it better. So is a temple”The reason for the Supreme to assume archa form is His excessive affinity for humanity and the knowledge that man does not have a perfect control of the senses to see Him within themselves. Hence the Lord descends and assumes the archa form. And this quality of the Lord exhibited in archai makes archai more important and celebration worthy than other states!

Hence, our Indian tradition has been giving a lot of importance to sannidhi sthapanam and utsavams. Recently, the children of the Gurukulam visited Arasaloor near Thottiyam. A beautiful sannidhi for Krishna exists there. But these years, no sannidhi for thayar existed there.  A Bhaktha accepted to install the divya-mangala-vigraha of SriMahaLakshmi at the temple.

Our Gurukulam children visited the temple during the Thayar sannidhi prathishtai and performed the following :
  • Panch sooktha paarayanam
  • 4000 divya prabandha thaniyans ( anadyenana period)

Courage in every cell...

Sri:
Srimate ramanujaya nama:
Priya arangan adiyar,

One attribute we all possess in various degrees is to brood over the negatives in our life. Though the negatives are negligible, our mind magnifies it to an extent that the positives seem like small fishes in an ocean of negative circumstances, negative traits etc.

But seldom do we contemplate what has been given to us by the Supreme Being. All our organs function well, we are well endowed with indriyas, we get food thrice a day, we have at least a person to look after us lovingly.

Despite these gifts of the Supreme, our nature is to wonder that “ the grass is always greener on the  other side”. In such a state of unwarranted self-pity, we should look outside and observe what others go through. We should also acquaint our children with the people who swim across the sea and fight the tides in spite of their natural inabilities.

The 1st and 2nd grade children of “Acharyah – School for leaders” recently visited a School for Blind children. The little children at the school had congenital blindness. Even a thought of closing our eyes for a few minutes makes us feel so handicapped. And yet these children have never seen the world; ;life is an imagination for them. They do not know how mother looks, or what father does, nor the gesture of the little sister that made the entire family laugh.

All our sympathies would turn into inspiration if we have a look at these children. They epitomise positivity and a sunny outlook at life.

The children of Acharyah hugged the other children and commenced the following, all by self:
  • Motivational talk from the Ithihasas and Puranas
  • Bhajan sessions where the Acharyah children sing and the others repeat
  • Games
  • Gifts to each child of the Blind school

The children of the Blind school performed the following on their part :
  • Non-stop Tirukkural recitation – all present were stunned at such a fluent recitation.
  • Continuous beautiful writing – with Braille methodology
  • Melodious Singing

When asked an Acharyah student what he learned from the visit, he said
“ Never speak ill of blind people” .

 Another casually told
They are like us only, only that they can’t see”

Another chipped in
“ They are better in remembering than us”

We all need to imbibe the lessons the children of Acharyah learned.....

Celebrated at the foe's camp - End ( + Thondin aaradhanai)

Priya arangan adiyar,

Celebrated at the foe's camp..... End (continued.....)

In Gita Bhashya, Swami Ramanuja says, “niradisaya-saundarya-sausilyadi-guṇagaṇa-aviṣkareṇa akrura-malakaradin parama-bhagavatan kṛtva.  Lord Krishna transformed the likes of Akrura and Malakara into Bhagavatas by means of His innumerable auspicious attributes.  His divine form and His auspicious attributes arrest the attention of the senses and capture the mind.  Finding nothing more beautiful, more auspicious and more blissful, finding no reason to complain due to complete absence of blemish, the mind is made to rest in one place and serves the good for man.

Likewise, Sri Ramayana is a showcase of the Lord’s auspicious attributes on display.  Sage Valmiki starts off the epic by questioning Narada for the one who has auspicious attributes and results with Lord Rama.

His exploits and attributes satisfy the hunger of the mind.  They satisfy all its diverse wants.  The individual can be liberated only if the mind rests with the Lord.  To make this possible, it is necessary for all people to be aware of the nature, attributes and exploits of the Lord.  Only a society of such people is a cultured and civilized society in its truest sense.  Otherwise, what is cultured in inventing new objects for the undying consumption of the mind?  Civility is the reflection of a stable and purposeful mind; the only entity that can arrest the mind and lead it to goodness is the Lord.

It is to inculcate this sense in our people that Srimaan Trust has been conducting SriRamayana contest at the school level, to attend to the minds when they are eager to learn.  It is to pave the way for a prosperous tomorrow through the agency of the children.

Enormous enthusiasm has been witnessed over the years in the response of students to Sri Ramayana contest.  This year too, great fervor was on display in all the centers in which the contest was held.  People transcended all inhibitions and differences, and took part in this contest.  To encourage through reward those who had taken a positive step for the welfare oftomorrow, prizes were distributed among the children.  The prizes were distributed on seventh February in Madurai, and on third February in Coimbatore.  Fittingly, Sri U Ve Badri Bhattar Svami discoursed on "Sri Ramanin Kalyana Gunangal" or the “Auspicious Attributes of Sri Rama”.

May the understanding of the great good that lies in the mind reposed in the auspicious attributes of Lord Rama create more enthusiasm and interest in such events.

Priya arangan adiyar,

Celebrated at the foe's camp - II ( continued........)

For the worst of things, the mind is perfectly capable of reasoning clear justifications on why it needs to engage with them.  It is a masterful deceiver who is always right and never in the wrong. It is believing of all that it likes and likes to convince with effortless ease.  Disorder is its order when it is in its prime.  Its fancies predate its reasons and create an illusion of reasoned action.

So the mind swirls taking man to its task.  The person is usually at its mercy and would be ready to do anything to keep it at peace – something it is never good at being.  For once it is satisfied with one, it will demand another.

Given the extreme consequences that the decisions taken by the mind have on us, our elders opined that the mind is the instrument through which one is bound and through which one is liberated.  Given the difficulty in controlling the flow of the mind, due to habit and due to our environment, it is more likely to bind than lead to liberation.

The only way to trap the mind in one place, a place of value, from where it can lead an individual to goodness, is to find an extremely auspicious and favourable position and allow it to rest there.  The mind would have to be ever satisfied in this place and have no complaints.  Only an infinitely auspicious being who free of all blemishes is capable of satisfying this requirement.  Only such an entity would be capable of entrapping the mind in itself and make it stay focused without distractions.  Such a being is the Lord.

Celebrated at the foe's camp.... - I

Sri:
Srimate ramanujaya Nama:
Priya arangan adiyar,

Turn on the lights in the room and the moth would rush towards the light.  Turn the light off and light the small lamp; the moth would rush to the lamp abandoning the light.  Turn on the lights in a different room and the moth will rush towards it. It is complete delight for the kids whose “experiments with the moth” lead to great satisfaction.

To such a kid who is thrilled by the fickle mindedness of the moth, make an offer of ice cream, and the kid would conclude his experiments with hurry and rush to the ice cream.  To all of us who laugh at how easily the moth and even our kids are easily manipulated, it should come as no surprise that we ourselves fare no better. The objects of interest change from moth to man and from childhood to oldage, but the mind is every ready to rush from one position of interest, even when the object of interest is not in sight.

Thoughts keep rushing through the mind.  Plans, musings, arguments, imaginations, dreams, ambitions, reasoning – there is nothing in the universe that we know of that works as tirelessly as the mind does.  No computer can process the complexity of data that the mind can.  Its assessments and reactions, impulses and responses keep running around the clock.  In a single minute, thousands of thoughts and perspectives take siege of the mind.  The senses lead the mind, sometimes, the mind leads the senses.  It is never ready to sit in one place.  It is always fault finding.  Nothing is too good to keep it entertained for long enough.  It would discover a defect, complain of boredom and move to something else.  It lacks direction, or it derives its direction from the force of habit and passion.
